About the time I found the advice on www.acne-advice.com, I had already decided to take myself off the Accutane and antibiotics I took to control my acne. Even without the helpful information from this site, I knew that the years of antibiotics and several treatments of Accutane must have been bad for my overall health.

A little over two months ago I was in the doctor's office trying to determine the reasons for persistent vaginal infections. I learned from my doctor that over the course of several years' worth of antibiotic usage my body developed resistant bacteria and overgrown yeasts. The medications given to me for my vaginal problems were not working and I kept having problems with yeast and bacteria. She was the first doctor who had ever mentioned anything to me about antibiotics doing long-term damage to my body.

It is hard for me to write down how I used to feel. My mind doesn't even want to go there because it is done and over with. But for the sake of the record, and of this story possibly inspiring others, I write it here.

I grew up eating a fairly typical American diet. I remember my mum limiting sweet cereals as a kid, and I always had an apple in my lunch bag (thanks Mom!).

I think pretty early on I developed an addiction to sugar, however. I regularly craved ice cream and sweets, and in my teen years I plunged into the not-so-wonderful world of fast food on a regular basis. Up until the 6th grade I remember looking and feeling pretty good, but after that my health seemed to get progressively worse. I ranged between being 15-20lbs overweight all through high school, and I developed severe acne, which lasted for over 16 years. I went on antibiotics and ended up spending four solid years on tetracycline and minocycline. It didn't work, but the doctor kept saying to just stay on it a little longer. I now know it actually caused a lot of other problems like candida and poor digestion, and in the long run, it actually made my acne worse.

I began to suffer from acne at around the age of 12; at one point it was so bad that I had to have two months off school as I refused to attend. I was prescribed all sorts of lotions and antibiotics, none of which seemed to work. This continued well into my 20s by which time I had been given various types of contraceptive pills which I was told would help balance my hormones — some of these did work for a while but there were side effects; weight gain, mood swings etc, so I was never entirely happy.
